The only way to evacuate large numbers of people from the frontline cities in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk was by railway. On April 8, 2022, the Russian army launched an attack on Kramatorsk station, disrupting the evacuation and turning into one of Russia’s bloodiest attacks of the war on Ukrainian civilians.
